The Process of Point Data Conversion into BIM Models

Work Range

As soon as the project begins, our project manager meets with our customer to discuss the project’s goals, such as repair, rebuilding or obtaining As-Built models. In this step, it is determined what further aspects need to be modelled and at what level of detail they should be. In general, the higher the LOD, the more accurate and expensive the project will be.

Client Recommendations

In order to build BIM models for a project once it is finished, our customer gives us with all the necessary data to create the models. It comprises laser-scanned data, site photos, etc. If there is any construction paperwork or 3D models of the building or structures available, these are also provided to us by the customer. There are two types of data that may be obtained from clients: registered and unregistered data. Our skills and knowledge can be put to use if the data given is unregistered.

Registration

Before Revit can be used to construct a model, it must be registered if the data acquired from the customer is not already registered. Scanning can’t be done all at once, therefore scans must be stitched together. In this case the construction paperwork is used as a point of reference together with 3600 photographs, for example.

Modeling

Revit or CAD is used to import the point cloud scan data (.rcp and.rcs). Architectural, structural and MEP components must be modelled before construction can begin. The model can be connected to time, cost, quantity, etc.-related variables, depending on the SOW. To guarantee that the model is error-free, the model is also checked for clashes with other models.

Final Output

Once the error-free BIM model has been generated, we give the customer with the output they require to complete their project. Construction documents, as-built drawings, 3D models, etc. Scan to BIM Services have been provided, however we’re still available for adjustments and ideas.
